Beverley Ramblers Annual Report 2008/9

2008/9 was another busy year for the Beverley Group. Our membership is about 360. We significantly expanded our walks programme and liaised with the Hull and Holderness Group in offering a large number of extra summer walks. In our programme for 2009/10 we have the prospect of a Beverley walk virtually every week throughout the year. We are very grateful to all our leaders but especially to the 12 new ones who have made this possible. The combination of a shorter walk plus a visit to a tea shop or pub continues to be extremely popular.

Our Coach Ramble in May, a first for the Beverley Group, was a great success, there were 35 participants of whom 23 walked at Hathersage and the remainder spent the day at Chatsworth House. It was nice to welcome walkers from the York, Pocklington, Hull & Holderness and Howden & Goole Groups.

During the year, Dennis Parker fought a long and successful campaign to improve safety provision for walkers in the plans for the Beverley Southern Relief Road and we secured funding to publish (probably in Spring 2010) a booklet of local walks annotated by the distinguished botanist, Dr Derrick Boatman.

Despite lacking a Social Secretary for the past year, our social programme ticked over reasonably well with jazz nights, charity quizzes and curry evenings in addition to our regular tea shop and pub visits. But your committee could do with more help in devising and organising social events. Contact Jean Cavill if you would like to help.
