Beverley R.A. Group Annual report 2007-8

This has been a busy and successful year for the Beverley R.A. Group. We have seen a net increase in our membership and significantly expanded our walking and social programmes. Our walks programme has been varied and interesting; ranging from the High Hunsley Circuit done in 3 linear stages to a Ghost Walk in Beverley which attracted 40 spook-seekers. In our Extra Summer Walks programme, the combination of shorter walks and a visit to a café/ tea shop or pub has proved very popular.

During the course of the year we have held 4 Committee Meetings, 2 Leaders Meetings, 1 Public Transport Planning Meeting and 1 Footpath Sub-Committee Meeting and published 3 newsletters. Members of the group continue to work in collaboration with the local authority refurbishing and updating footpaths and we are attempting to liaise with Parish Councils in promoting knowledge of the parish paths network by organising joint walks.  Beverley Group again played a prominent role in the R.A presence at the Driffield Show and Beverley Applefest and Peter Ayling has organised R.A. recruitment and information stalls at a number of other events.

We are proud that one of our founder members, Dennis Parker, has received recognition for his outstanding contribution by the rare distinction of Honorary Life Membership of the R.A. Among the campaigns that he is presently waging on behalf of walkers is an attempt to have re-instated, in the plans for the Beverley Southern Relief Road, a refuge for those crossing the new road. Its omission would be serious - indeed potentially dangerous - and we will do all we can to support his efforts.
Dany Wlodarczyk is fronting our plans to introduce a series of public transport walks. Possible routes will be tried out over the winter and a programme published in 2009.

We are also looking forward to our Coach Ramble to Derbyshire in May and, among the many varied social events that Susan Kay has planned for us, a repeat visit to Beverley Races.
