GYBO – EY&D RA Area Young Peoples’ Group

This has been an exceptionally busy year for GYBO. We have arranged a varied calendar of walks with something to suit everyone. The monthly social at the Brigantes is going from strength to strength and gives good opportunities for potential members to meet us before donning their boots in the field. Use of social networking websites has enabled individuals to arrange car shares in addition to providing publicity for the group. We have also numerous fresh and eager faces enjoying our events and adding their own individual contributions.  Paul Rhodes and Cath Guest have been actively involved in Area meetings, events and publications.

Themed Walks
We started the winter months investigating parts of York we did not know existed courtesy of the Millennium Way. The short sections of the Millennium Way gave a gentle introduction to walking and brought in many new members. Our main themed walk was the Centenary Way from York to Filey which proved very popular. Many people looked toward completing their first long distance walk. We were able to use both First Bus and the Yorkshire Coastliner to help with transport on the linear sections.

Weekends Away
GYBO had many weekends away including the Galloway Forest Park, Coniston in the Lake District, successful completion of the 3 Yorkshire Peaks and camping at the foot of Helvellyn in stormy weather. We also had a weekend away in Scarborough and our final adventure was at Slaidburn at Halloween within a short distance of Pendle Hill.

Forward Planning.
No GYBO calendar would be complete without the Annual Carols at Rievaulx. Already two weekends away in the Lake District and Scotland are in the pipeline. We also have some exciting social events to look forward to.  This includes a joint venture with the Darlington Hills and Dales group which will give a great opportunity to network with other young walkers. We look forward to providing a walks and social calendar for the young at heart in 2009.
