Books and Maps

The following books of walks in our area have been recommended. Please let us know if you have other favourites, especially if they are still in print.

cleveland circles
The book describes 30 walks around the 108 mile Cleveland Way, the National Trail which traverses magnificent moorland and coastal countryside round the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

‘Cleveland Circles’ divides the linear route into 30 separate, self contained but inter-linked shorter day circular walks, thus allowing the whole of the National Trail to be covered over an extended period without the need to arrange overnight accommodation.

The circular walks permit walkers to explore the foothills of the Hambleton Hills and parts of the North York Moors that lie adjacent to, but not actually on, the Cleveland Way. Each circuit is approximately 10 miles long but includes options for those preferring a route of about 5 miles.

Each walk includes places of natural beauty and secular interest including famous abbeys, numerous historic churches and other less well known centres of worship, so the walks could be used as a focus for Christian pilgrimage.
‘Cleveland Circles’ is well researched and beautifully illustrated with photos and humourous cartoons throughout. Well worth buying and following.

Price £9, profits to Christian Aid.
Contact the author, John Eckersley, at Heslington Vicarage, York YO10 5EE.

Car Free Countryside Walks Accessible From York
15 walks that can be enjoyed using some of the buses or trains services that pass through York. They are all round the city and of varying lengths from a short 3 miles up to a lengthy 12 miles.  Eight of the walks are linear, utilising public transport at either end and meaning you wouldn’t have to return to your car. Patsy has suggested times and routes of buses to use on each walk and has also listed details of each transport company if you need to check information on a particular day. Most of the buses/trains she uses run daily services and only two walks are dependant on the Moorsbus service and could only be done during Summer.

Although Patsy has provided full route descriptions, her maps are sketchy and you will need a proper OS map to follow and these are listed in the introduction.

All the walks are worth trying and could lead to other discoveries. So why not leave the car at home and give the bus or train a go?

Her book costs £4-99p and is available from local bookshops or from the author, Patsy Pendergast herself (add 50p p&p) at 92 The Village, Haxby, York YO32 2JL. Profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the RA.

EXPLORING LAKE PICKERING
In 1902 Percy Kendall described how a great lake existed in the Vale of Pickering during the Ice Age. Although modified since then, two lakes did exist in that area, and this book describes a 155 mile trail round the edges, broken up into 36 interlinked day circular walks. These walks include the Howardian and Tabular hills, as well as the Wolds and Coast, and the book contains a wealth of local information.
